Resume Frequently Asked Questions

Not sure if you need a professionally written resume? Read our FAQs to help you decide.

Does my résumé really matter that much?

Research shows that employers decide within 30 seconds whether to reject a job application - and they spend that 30 seconds reading your résumé. If you're not getting the interviews, chances are your résumé and application package are letting you down. To end up on the shortlist, not in the rejects pile, you need a professionally designed, expertly tailored package that markets you to the employer or recruiter.

What exactly is a professional résumé?

A professional résumé is an information-rich marketing document: a concise two to four page summary of your experience, achievements & qualities presented in a striking, well balanced layout with scrupulous attention to language, punctuation, spelling and overall impact.

But I've got a PC - why don't I just write my own résumé?

Go ahead, but do you really have the time and the expertise? Most DIY résumé look dull, contain many errors, and fail to 'sell' the person's suitability for the job.

So, how do you write a professional résumé?

These days résumé need to be far more than a typed-up list of your employment details. Your résumé needs to show a potential employer or recruitment agent that you 'fit' the job you're applying for.

Employers and recruiters also want to know how you will fit into their team and add value to the culture of their organisation.

So every document I create contains a personal profile, identifying your key strengths and achievements, as well relevant details of your work history. I obtain this information through a face-to-face or telephone interview.

A résumé also needs to be visually effective: professionally formatted with a balanced design. All the key information appears on the first page.

What about application letters?

For most jobs, you'll also need a concise, punchy one-page cover letter. I write cover letters that immediately show the employer how you meet their needs. Even before they read your résumé, they're impressed with your profile.

Can you help with selection criteria?

Yes, I specialize in working with you to write responses to selection criteria for government & public sector positions. I know what the recruiters are looking for in selection criteria responses. I present the relevant information in polished but natural language - free from any punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors.

I also tailor common selection criteria responses (EEO, EAPS , OH &S etc) to reflect your employment experience.

I have to apply online. Can you still help?

Definitely! I provide your résumé in the required file format (MSWord document or .pdf file), so all you have to do is attach it to the online application. I can also provide criteria responses ready for you to cut and paste into the online application form. If you're unsure how online applications work, I can even take you through the process step-by-step.
